Why do we cover our heads? I would like to give you a little insight to why we cover and how it protects and elevates one’s body, heart and mind.
And say to the believing women that they lower their gaze and restrain their sexual passions and do not display their adornment except what appears thereof. And let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms. And they should not display their adornment except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or guileless male servants, or the children who know not women’s nakedness. Surah 24:31
Here in America, it’s generally accepted to “flaunt it if you got, showcasing our hair with elaborate styles and color; our face with make-up, and our bodies with or very little clothes to embellish the form of our naturally God-given attractive force as women. We have physical adornments which are created to attract the opposite sex for procreation. This world lends more celebration and attention to the sexual gratification of women than to the true purpose and mind of women.
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. – 1Corinithians 11: 5-6
Historically, Africans used hairstyles to convey various spiritual and social statuses. After being brought to America as slaves, we were dehumanized and degraded by shaving our head, forced to cover it with rough, unbecoming fabrics as not to show up white women around their men. Subconsciously and consciously we might still be rebelling against our former slave master’s practices, but in doing so, we are also rebelling against God’s Word.
If you look at Mary, she was put in a place where she could not be contaminated with the wickedness of the world…..Allah(God) needed a good woman, uncontaminated by the world, through whom He could bring the Messiah…Little did we know that when the television was made and we put it in our living rooms that the wicked ideas of a satanic mind that governs this world would come into our homes and spoil our women and children. – Closing the Gap, page 57
There have been many famous women in Judaism, Christianity and Islam that cover, but of the most well known and beloved of women is Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. She is depicted in numerous drawings with a veil, but very rarely copied by Christian women. She is mentioned in the Quran:
And mention Mary in the Book. When she drew aside from her family to an eastern place; So she screened herself from them. Then We sent to her Our spirit and it appeared to her as a well-made man. She said: I flee for refuge from thee to the Beneficent, if thou art one guarding against evil. Surah 19:16-18
What does it mean to screen oneself? What was she seeking refuge from? Why?
The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad said:
Our women have been and are still being used by the devil white race, ever since we were first brought here to these States as slaves. They cannot go without being winked at, whistled at, yelled at, slapped, patted, kicked and driven around in the streets by your devil enemies right under your nose. Yet you do nothing about it, nor do you even protest. – Message to the Black Man, Page 60
There are countless reported and untold rapes assaults done to women every minute. One in five (21%) women reported she had been raped or physically or sexually assaulted in her lifetime. Annually in the United States, 503,485 women are stalked by an intimate partner. One in 12 women and one in 45 men will be stalked in their lifetime, for an average duration of almost two years. Seventy-eight percent of stalking victims are women. Don’t you want the highest protection you can get for yourself and your family?
Research has shown that non-verbal messages cover 70 to 90 percent of human communication. The head cover serves as a spiritual check for you and those whose minds are weakened by Satan’s world, sending the heart and mind towards self-correction knowing you are dealing with one that is publicly proclaiming acceptance of God’s Will. It protects your mind, and possibly, your person from offensive or damaging conversation and actions as well. Even though it’s mostly thought of as oppressive, it is in fact a social and spiritual protection for the man and woman. Neither are readily inclined to lead or be led astray. This keeps the purification of the heart and mind to be one with ALLAH (God) evolving more freely with fewer disruptions along the road of life.

I, as Black women in America, have honestly found it difficult at times to be consistent in keeping my hair covered because of fear of rejection, feeling that I won’t be accepted by my family or peers. This gradually lessened with time, study of the Word of God, assessing my own thoughts and experiences day-to-day. I am more resolved in living what I know to be true in His Word to His Divine Servants because by my seeking HIS Protection, Guidance, and Pleasure alone, I’m still sane, loved, healthy, and still here. You can say I’m more comfortable in the skin and veil I’m in.
