[Black Business Exclusive] Mosque Flow: The Design. The Brand. The Lifestyle.

Ebony S. Muhammad (EM): As-Salaam Alaikum dear brothers! Briefly, tell the H2H readers a little bit about yourselves and your area of expertise.

Mosque Flow (MF): Walaikum Salaam Sister Ebony! Thank you so much for inviting us to share our experience with your wonderful audience! We are truly humbled and grateful for this opportunity.

We’re a family business excited to introduce a new brand that reflects the lifestyle and culture of our faith, which is Islam. Our Dad, Brother Jeffrey B. Muhammad is a college professor specializing in Civil Engineering CAD Design. He’s also a digital visual artist, and enjoys combining his talents to create some really awesome work. We’re two Brothers out of six siblings, Ahmad and Maajid Muhammad. We recently graduated from our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) high school and we’re currently studying Architectural & Engineering CAD Design in college with our Dad. How cool is that?!

Our love for Islam, fashion and 3D design quickly sparked a new interest in us for entrepreneurship. Even our little Brother, Makai is part of our team and he’s developing some awesome new designs!

EM: You’ve launched a high-end jewelry company, Mosque Flow. How was it conceived? How did the idea come to you and how did it grow from there?

MF: In our fields of work and study, we’re constantly involved in the design process. So, we’re always talking about new ideas. And one day it just clicked, “We should start a small business creating things that reflect our way of life!” So, we combined our artistic and technical skills and with just a little research we discovered that everything we needed to get started was right there, and we went for it!

EM: What form of jewelry does Mosque Flow feature and why did you choose this item first?

MF: Our first ideas were actually not our first release, we put them on hold for a very special reason. We were inspired by the social media work that Brother Jesse Muhammad (award-winning blogger and journalist) has done over the last few years on behalf of The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. So we wanted to honor Brother Jesse with a one of a kind gift… a lapel pin that reflects his work with The #FarrakhanTwitterArmy (FTA). Surprising him with the gift was such an awesome moment! It actually caused us to believe in ourselves, that we could make something real and meaningful for someone! So we teamed up with Brother Jesse to create the #FTA brand of pins as our first product instead of our original line. We also introduced premium quality Mosque Flow brand t-shirts named ‘5-Star’ as a reflection of quality we strive to produce.

EM: What makes Mosque Flow unique from any other jewelry brand and line?

MF: #MosqueFlow is more than fashion. It’s actually a way of life. It’s dedicating your life to doing a divine work of improving self to help resurrect & restore all of humanity regardless of race, class or color! For that reason every new design reflects mosque life with significant meaning. So, we strive to represent our culture in a fashionable and positive way, based on a divine purpose.

EM: What has been the most challenging part about building your business?

MF: Designing is the fun part, but the most challenging part is the coordination of various business aspects. We tend to be perfectionists, so small details mean a lot to us. Being professional and providing high quality service is among our highest priorities. So we spend just as much time making sure everything is on point as we do designing something new. But on a funny note: there were other business names that we considered before finally and thankfully choosing Mosque Flow! LOL!

EM: What has been the most exciting aspect of building Mosque Flow and what has the response been like from family, friends and general public?

MF: The most exciting part about being on the Mosque Flow Team is creating something from nothing and seeing it become reality! The design process is a God-like activity… Be and it is! The attributes of being a creator, maker and originator are naturally inherent in our work, which makes it so rewarding! The response has been overwhelmingly positive! Everyone we talk to has so many nice things to say. They are very encouraging and happy to see young people doing great work!

EM: I love that it’s a family business. Many believe that those are the most complicated to begin, maintain and thrive in, especially Black families. What are your thoughts about that and how would you respond to such ideals?

MF: As a family we always have fun together! We’re constantly laughing and brainstorming new ideas. The Mosque Flow Team is blessed to have so many talented family members involved in all aspects; from designing all the way to doing photo shoots with our cousin/niece Sister Alexis X, our older Brother/Son A’Darius and Believers from the Mosque! A strong family makes for a strong community and Nation, so we think it actually works in our favor.

EM: Where do you see Mosque Flow in 5, 10 and 20 years? Do you have plans to expand the line to earrings, cuff links, pendants, bracelets, etc.?

MF: God willing, we hope that Mosque Flow will continue to grow! The one virtue that we promised ourselves to live by is patience. In 5 years we’d like to be an inspiration for young entrepreneurs to pursue their own visions. In 10 years we’d like to be providing jobs & opportunities for others. In 20 years we pray that dad can retire, LOL! Our next (and original) line of products will be coming out soon, which includes all of the items you mentioned… jewelry, clothing, custom design services & more! God willing, there’s some even bigger plans for us that we hope to tell you about soon, concerning Saviours’ Day 2016… Really big!

EM: Is there anything else you would like to add?

MF: Yes Ma’am! We want to thank everyone that has supported us in our first few months! And of course a very special thank you to you, Sister Ebony, for this very special opportunity! We hope your audience has enjoyed our story as much as we are honored to share it with you. Anyone can visit our web site MosqueFlow.com and connect with us on social media @MosqueFlow !

This was a very inspirational article. I remember the visual presentation Brither Jeffrey produced years ago under “Bold Minds” of a model community (wish that was still available to show my children), and now to see what his family is producing! Reminds me of the Proverbs verse that exhorts us to train up a child in the way he should go and he will not depart from it! May Allah (God) bless them with tremendous support and success!
