Alicia Keys partners with change.org and #cut50, an initiative founded by Van Jones, to launch the #WeAreHere for #JusticeReformNOW movement. Earlier this week, the Grammy award winning singer made a call-to-action in an open letter to fans, encouraging them to sign a petition to reform the justice system. In her plea, Keys explains the need to “scale back overly harsh sentences for nonviolent drug offenders” adding the broken system is “destroying families.”

Adding, “Rather than treating drug addiction and mental illness with compassion and treatment, we punish and incarcerate mothers, fathers and children. Our prisons have become warehouses for the poor, addicted, and mentally ill. We have to change this.”

To date, more than 90+ celebrities and 110,000 Change.org users have signed on. According to #cut50, more than 12,000 people signed the petition within 30 minutes of it’s launch. Now, the movement is asking others to let their voice be heard as it will “help encourage congressional leadership to move these bills forward and help us put the best possible solutions on President Obama’s desk, while we still can,” Jones said in a statement.
